We are starting in Picadilly station area and would like to get a car rental. Would this be better than picking up at airport area?

Well search for that and then search for Manchester Picadilly station and compare the offers at those 2 locations. I think the airport will have a greater choice and lower rates ( normally).

OK. But last time we rented a car in Britain we returned a car only to be told we had all these charges for damages. I have read online about alot of this occuring. Adding up to $1000. and more....This was at Gatwick.

No, not really. Not what we would call damages.

I wouldn't believe all your read... Just take the extra insurance , and take photos when you collect any rental car anywhere. And take photos when you return it. So you can always show proof.
